Star Wars Galactic Heroes: Assault on the Death Star

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Over the years, many manufacturers have given their take of the Star Wars universe in the form of toys or collectables. Most have gone with the realistic look such as the Hasbro line of Star Wars action figures but this time Star Wars comes to us non-proportional and super cute in Hasbro's (formerly released by Playskool) line of Galactic Heroes:

Jek Porkins and his X-Wing

Much like everyone else, the X-wing is one of my favorite space crafts from Star Wars. I personally have a small plastic Micro Machine and a snap model kit of the X-wing but the Galactic Heroes X-wing stands out with its cute proportions.

The Assault on the Death Star package is a cinema scene line of Galatic Heroes so it includes a number of small figurines that are also sold as small packs of 2 and usually a large item such as a monster or space craft (like the X-Wing in this set).

Like all Galactic Heroes cinema scene sets, the packaging is a half circle shape, features an open window to see the contents, and the inside packaging is colored and crafted to replicate a scene from the movie.

Included: Jek Porkins, R5-D8, General Dodonna, helmet, and X-wing.

The X-Wing cockpit will open to fit Porkins inside. The wings of the X-wing will also open, just like the movie, to the fighter's iconic X configuration.

R5-D8 fits right behind the cockpit. The grooves in the X-wing help hold the R5-D8 while he's sitting on top.

A nice aspect of the cinema sets are the use of folded paper to replicate scenes from the movie just like this computer console for General Dodonna.

I really like the space crafts packages with the Galactic Heroes cinema line because of their cuteness and their playability with the figurines. But the figurines are not as entertaining as they have no articulation but just a shaped piece of plastic. They're very cute but there's only so much you can do. The figurines are still good to smash together to represent a hand to hand combat and very durable for children.

The Galactic Heroes cinema line has been very popular and frequently sold old. Hasbro has been slowly releasing many different sets so it'll take a while to collect them all. If you're looking for something cute from the Star Wars universe that won't hurt your wallet, I highly recommend this as a start to your collection.
