Transformers Prime: Bumblebee First Edition Deluxe Review

Everyone's favorite non-speaking Transformer is back with beeps for his voice

Bumblebee is back and his voice box is damaged in this universe too. Once again he's the scout for the Autobots but packs quite a punch with his dual arm blasters.

After a whole season of Transformers Prime without any toy line, Hasbro finally releases deluxe wave one with Arcee, Bumblebee, and Starscream.

Box Front:

Box Back:

Front:

Left:

The black line across the side of Bumblebee doesn't line up between the front of the car and the door.

Right:

Back:

Lack of paint apps. I guess we should be lucky Hasbro decided to color the break lights.

Top:

The best angle of Bumblebee in car mode.

Bottom:

Yes, it looks oddly familiar to all the movie Bumblebee deluxe toys. At least this one doesn't have Bumblebee staring at us.

Transformers Prime Bumblebee with Transformers The Movie Deluxe Bumblebee:

TF Prime Bumblebee looks similar to the concept Camero but more futuristic

Mid-transformation:

No mech tech or automorph this time around.  Unlike the movie toys, the chest piece is the hood of the car which splits apart.  The hood is then held by a hinge  similar to a collar bone.  It makes the chest piece easy to pop out of place when you're posing his arms.

Front:

Bumblebee is short and muscular looking. Definitely a difference to his G1 self.  The ankle wheels stick out too much, his door wings don't angle upward, and his missing a number of black paint apps compared to the show.

Left:

Nice big 5mm peg lets you plug in his included blaster or other standard Transformers guns.

Right:

Just like the other Transformers Prime figures, Bumblebee features a good number of swivels, ball joints, and hinges in great locations such as swivel leg-waist and arm-body, hinges at his knee, foot, arm, and hand, and ball joints on his elbow.

Back:

Hasbro did an amazing job minimizing the back kibble on Bumblebee. If you look at Bumblebee's feet, you'll notice light grey heels. Those help stabilize Bumblebee in a big way.

Weapon:

Although Bumblebee can open up his arms to reveal guns on both his arms, the deluxe toy only comes with 1 gun - pick wisely.

Transformers Prime Bumblebee with ROTF Human Alliance Bumblebee:

TF Prime Bumblebee is much closer looking to his show than Human Alliance Bumblebee is to the movie. You'll also notice the yellow on TF Prime Bumblebee is much brighter. I would've preferred HA Bumblebee's colors.

Bumblebee feels like just another Bumblebee from the movie because the transformation and alt mode are so similar to the movie. But Bumblebee actually looks really accurate to the TV show. He's fun to pose and a very stable figure. Just like all other toyline waves with Bumblebee, he makes up half the case in the first wave and will make up more than 1/3 of the next case. So there are a lot of Bumblebees out there selfwarming your local Toys R Us (TRU). Perhaps like most other Transformers collectors, I am just a tad bored of another Bumblebee but he is a decent figure that's a must have if you're collecting the whole Transformers Prime cast and worth picking him up if you can get him under $10.

It feels so much like the same but the bot mode is different in a good way.

Eric Toy Score: 3.5 out of 5

Publisher: Hasbro
Year: November 2011
Price: $12.99

Note: Hasbro has announced the cancellation of the First Edition line of Transformers Prime toys for the US (source).  Bumblee fills up almost half the First Edition cases and appeared in two waves of First Edition deluxe toys so prices for Bumblee on the secondary market are below MSRP.
