Sneaking around with a beam scythe is serious business
After the success of the 49 episode Gundam Wing anime, Bandai followed up with a 3 episode OVA called Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. As in Gundam Wing, Duo Maxwell, one of the protangonists, pilots the popular Gundam Deathscythe but is captured by OZ's forces and destroyed. A small group of scientists, forced by OZ to develop new mobile suit technology for OZ, secretly reconstruct Gundam Deathscythe into Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom.
Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom was the first wave of Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz model kits. All the mecha featured from the show have been represented in the 1/144 scale. However, a while later, all the mecha were also released in a much better 1/100 scale. The 1/144 scale is very simplistic and economical compared to all the other scales and makes a good toy. In this review, I applied most of the decals but didn't do any painting and no glue.
Box front:
Side of Box:
Opened front:
With its wings fully opened, Deathscythe Hell is very intimidating
Opened side:
Very pointy toes.
Opened back:
As intended by the designers, Deathscythe Hell resembles a bat with its wings fully opened
Closed front:
The red tips of the wings can swing in and out of the wing
Closed side:
You can easily see the robot between the front and back of the wing
Closed back:
Wing detail:
The wings are not hinged so you need to unplug the wing ends and connector to get the different shapes
Wing pieces:
The wing is broken into 4 main parts, the tail part of the wing, the top part of the wing, the ends of the wing, and the small connector that holds the top with the ends.
Wing settings(Open, Semi-opened, Closed)
The wings do not move on hinges but require you to use the connector piece and the various pegs to get the wings in the open, semi-opened, and closed shapes. Would have been nice if it were hinged.
Wing attachment:
The wings attach to a backpack that attaches to the back of Deathscythe
With Gundam Wing Zero Custom:
Gundam Deathscythe Hell can hold his own against Gundam Wing Zero Custom
Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom 1/144 is a very small toy which goes well with other Gundam models as every Gundam mecha has been released in a 1/144 scale. It also plays well with the much more expensive MSIA line of Gundam toys. A lot of details are lost at this small scale and painting at this scale can be a challenge. But this scale are very straight forward to put together so you'll be done one of these within an hour. Unlike many other Gundam Wing models, Deathscythe Hell Custom includes a good number of color molded pieces and decals that make the model look good even without the paint. If you're looking a inexpensive alternative to the Gundam toys or a starter model kit, the Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom 1/144 is a great choice.
Gundam Wing Deathscythe Custom:
Sadly the scythe isn't made of clear green plastic but is a solid yellow.
